Ink-tober and Handmade Gift Tags

Hello guys! I hope anxiety from COVID or the recent elections have not gotten the best of you. Sometimes I have to tune them out and I make art.

Last month, I took part in INK-tober, a worldwide challenge where each participant makes something with ink every day in October. It can be a sketch, a cartoon, a doodle.

I chose to practice my brush lettering.

I used prompts from Maurelle that she posted on Instagram. It's a list of lovely autumn flowers.

The repetition was very meditative.

And it was educational because I am now able to identify the flowers in my neighborhood.

I was so inspired, I also made a watercolor rendition of each flower. 

But wait, there's more!

I assembled these elements (together with card stock and upcycled envelopes) to create these handmade gift tags...TADA!

I've been trying to learn new skills during this pandemic and video tutorials is one of them. But boy! It's hours and hours of work! I thought I'd try it out because it's another way to tell stories and share ideas. As always, thank you for your support and encouragement!

And what about the news this weekend?! Whatever your politics may be, let's give it up for Kamala Harris for being the first woman and first woman of color (and she's a daughter of immigrants) to hold the office of Vice President of the United States! Here's to possibility, diversity, hope, and healing for the country.

A Washi Tape Pen-style Dispenser

Guys, you know how much I love washi tape. I've talked about it here, here, here and here. It's embarrassing to admit, but I've amassed quite a collection:

It started with just one shelf that grew over the years -- I know, I have a problem.

I get giddy whenever I see washi tape as well as different ways to keep them organized.

This is a canvas pouch similar to a pencil case that can hold up to 12 standard rolls. I spotted it at Daiso, a Japanese dollar store. 

Here is a plastic box with a built in cutter, also from Daiso.

A friend of mine knew of my "addiction" and she give me this for my birthday:

It's a washi tape dispenser!

It looks like a pen.

On one side, there's a strip with teeth to neatly cut the tape.

It came with these plastic bolts to hold the tape and a dial to aid in winding the tape to the bolts.

I can't read Japanese to save my life. Good thing it had easy to follow instructions. There are tutorials on You Tube, too. 

The hard part was to chose which washi tape designs I wanted to put on the pen.

I love flowers so this was an easy choice.

Another favorite because it reminds me of postal envelopes.

I like the art deco vibe of this one plus its masculine colors. 

And this one reminds me of floor tiles from an Italian villa, Spanish hacienda, or Moroccan riad.

The pen opens on top.

I added the bolts of tape in the slot.

A tiny tape collection in a handy container...TADA! I'll always have washi tape to seal an envelope or decorate a package.

I can also include it in the writing kit I assembled that I can bring with me when we are able to travel again after this pandemic.

Today is all about decorations, costumes, and candy! Enjoy them all!

Gift Clips

I hope ya'll are doing well today!

You may have seen these mesh sacks before. They are bags used as packaging for garlic, onions, and lemons. Not wanting to throw them away, I turned them from blah to TADA!

I made them into gift clips...TADA!

Let me show you how:

I cut off the ends where they were pinched together.

I folded the mesh in half.

Then I cut them into two.

I stacked them together.

Next, I gathered the mesh at the center and sewed it in place. After a few stitches, I made a tight knot to keep the thread from unraveling.

I fluffed up the ends to make it look like a flower in bloom.

 

I painted some wooden clothespins (paint it in any color you want or don't paint them at all).

Then I attached the mesh flower to the clothespin with hot glue and let it dry for a few minutes.

Then I added some color in the form of pompoms (also attached with hot glue).

You can also stick on some small toys.

Or buttons.

Or a crochet heart.

Even wooden beads!

Today, we recycled some mesh, rescued some odds and ends, and made charming gift clips that instantly transform a brown paper package from blah to TADA!

And I hope that whoever receives these gifts will keep recycling the gift clips in the future.

Another Pouch with Iron-on Patches

Thank you for visiting me today! Several years ago, I turned a plain pouch from blah to TADA!

It's a linen bag that I decorated with iron-on patches purchased from my travels. I kept adding patches on both sides, I already ran out of space.

So here I am with a new pouch.

And a lot of patches that I've collected for new crafting projects.

I chose these patches and decided where to position them.

Then I secured them in place with a hot iron.

It's a sassy storage solution for crafting materials. Or make-up. Or tech gear like phone chargers and ear phones.

Just to dial up the cuteness, I added a zipper pull...TADA!

Maybe you have neglected bags at home? Why not give them new life with patches like these.
